How Much Should I Spend On Rent?
The classic 30%-of-income rent rule was written for a very different economy. In high cost-of-living cities, it's often mathematically impossible. In low-COL areas, it's too generous.
A better benchmark: rent + renter's insurance + utilities should stay under 35% of take-home pay AND leave at least 15% for savings after all essentials. If either fails, something has to change — the rent, the roommate situation, or the neighborhood.
A cheaper apartment isn't a downgrade if it lets you save aggressively. The freedom that comes from a fully-funded emergency fund almost always outweighs a nicer kitchen.
